5th Grade Objectives
In this class, you will be investigating the earliest human civilizations. You will be able to describe the technology that was necessary to help humans become as advanced as they are today. By using maps, timelines, and ancient artifacts, you will be able to talk about and identify specific cultures from history. You will also be able to think critically about the past and compare it to the present, as well as describe how the past cultures have created our present cultures. You will learn to write a research essay during the year, as well as how to create a Prezi online presentation.
Fall Semester
You will start the year off with a quick review of your map skills. You will investigate the different types of maps we will be using this year. I will also teach you about time lines and how to use them. Next, we will begin to use the textbook. We will start with chapter 1, which teaches about the earliest human civilizations in Sumer and Mesopotamia. We will finish out the semester by learning about ancient Egypt. Throughout the year, in Language Arts class, you will be reading novels that go together with your history lessons. You will also have a big project that is due at the end of the semester.
Spring Semester
We will continue to learn about ancient Egypt in the beginning of the Spring Semester. We will then move on to the chapters about Ancient India and China. We will finish the year out by learning about the ancient Greek civilization, and how influential their culture has been on the modern world. You will have a research essay to write during this semester as well as a final project.
