What to Expect This Year
Reading:
You will be reading three novels this year. We will be starting with The Twits by Roald Dahl, followed by The Cricket in Times Square by George Seldon, and finally Charlotte's Web by E.B. White. You will also read a book of your choice from the library as well as other short stories and poems.
Writing:
You will learn about the steps of the writing process. You will write several short writings and several long writings this year. The first thing you will write is a creative story about Halloween. You will also write a personal essay during the Fall Semester. During the Spring semester you will work on a literary "Zine" which is like a magazine and a portfolio together. You will write short stories and poems, do drawings and paintings, and combine all of them into the "Zine". This will be a long term project. In addition to these writing assignments, you will have in class writing like comprehension questions about your books or quick journal entries.
Grammar:
You will learn about the English language this year and how to use it. We will break apart the language into little parts and investigate what they mean and how to use them properly. You will do many exercises in your English book and have periodic quizzes.
Vocabulary:
Along with each novel you are reading, you will have vocabulary words to learn. These words also act as spelling words. You will have to fill out a word map for each word, and will have quizzes on the words as well. In addition the the words I choose for you to learn, you need to choose your own words as well.
